Liverpool’s Patience with Federico Chiesa Could Pay Off

Updated: Dec 5, 2024

Federico Chiesa is gradually working his way back to full fitness at Liverpool, with manager Arne Slot taking a cautious approach to the Italian forward’s reintegration. Since joining from Juventus in the summer for a bargain fee of €12m, the 26-year-old has only played 78 minutes, but there’s plenty of optimism about his potential.

Chiesa’s injury history has raised some concerns, but Ben Dinnery of Premier Injuries sees the transfer as a smart move. “This is a player who was once valued at €80m-90m,” Dinnery explained. “Given what Liverpool paid, it’s a low-risk deal with a high ceiling. He’s not expected to be a regular starter yet, and Liverpool’s attacking depth allows for that.”

Drawing comparisons to Christian Pulisic’s slow start at Chelsea, Dinnery urged patience. “It took Pulisic a year to settle before showing his true value. With Chiesa, it’s far too early to make judgments. Adjusting to new surroundings, teammates, and training takes time.”

Liverpool’s squad depth has been crucial this season, even as they’ve navigated injuries to players like Diogo Jota and Alisson. Slot’s careful handling of Chiesa is aimed at ensuring a long-term return to form. “It’s not just about getting him back on the pitch - it’s about making sure he stays fit,” Dinnery noted. “The focus is on building his readiness so he can seamlessly transition into regular football when the time is right.”

Though Chiesa’s impact has been limited so far, Liverpool’s strategic approach suggests the best is yet to come for the Italian star. With patience and careful management, he could still prove to be a vital asset for the Reds in the seasons ahead.
