Maguire Stands by Amorim: “He’s a Winner, and We’ll Turn This Around”

Harry Maguire has thrown his full support behind Manchester United’s new head coach, Ruben Amorim, despite the team’s rough start to the season. With United languishing in 14th place after losing half of their opening 10 games under Amorim’s tenure, Maguire remains optimistic that the Portuguese manager can spark a turnaround.

Speaking ahead of United’s crucial clash with Newcastle, Maguire acknowledged the stark contrast between Amorim’s philosophy and that of his predecessor, Erik ten Hag. "The thing is with the managers and the styles, it’s not like they have similar approaches," Maguire said. "They are the total opposite in terms of what they demand and how they want us to play."

Amorim has faced significant challenges adapting a squad designed for transitional, counter-attacking football to his possession-heavy style, which emphasizes a high defensive line. His preference for a back-three system has further complicated matters. Nevertheless, Maguire expressed confidence in Amorim's ability to adapt and succeed. "We all have great belief in the manager and his coaching staff. He knows exactly what he needs to do to get this club back on track," Maguire added.

Monday’s match against Newcastle, United’s final game of 2024, comes at a critical juncture. The team has suffered three consecutive defeats across all competitions, including a 2-0 loss to Wolves. To make matters worse, captain Bruno Fernandes will miss the game due to suspension following a red card.

Despite the mounting pressure, Amorim has remained resolute. When asked about his frustrations with the poor run of results, Maguire responded: "He’s a winner, so of course he’s frustrated. He hates losing games, just like all of us. It’s been a tough start, but we’re determined to make things right."

United’s struggles have fueled speculation about Amorim’s future, with some questioning whether he could be sacked just two months into the job. Maguire, however, dismissed such concerns, emphasizing that the team’s focus is on improving their position in the league.

"We’re just doing everything we can to climb the table," Maguire said. "Right now, we can’t set long-term targets because we’re far from where we need to be. Everyone knows it’s been a disappointing season so far, and it’s not acceptable for a club like Manchester United."

The coming weeks will test Amorim’s resilience as United face a resurgent Newcastle followed by a showdown with league leaders Liverpool. For now, Maguire remains steadfast in his belief that Amorim is the right man for the job. "He’s really demanding, and he’s done everything he can to set us up for success. It’s on us as players to deliver and make the fans proud," Maguire concluded.

With time running out to salvage their season, all eyes will be on Old Trafford as United looks to turn words into action.
