Javier Mascherano is the new head coach of Inter Miami, taking over just days after Gerardo "Tata" Martino’s departure. For Mascherano, the opportunity to work with Lionel Messi and reunite with former Barcelona teammates Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“The privilege of coaching Messi,” Mascherano said when asked why he took the job. “And, of course, players like Luis, Busi, Jordi, and others I’ve known, as well as the young talents like Noah Allen and David Ruiz. Having spent time working with youth players, I love the opportunity to help them grow.”
Mascherano, who started his coaching career with Argentina’s U-20 team, now inherits a Miami squad that broke records in 2024 by winning the Supporters’ Shield with 74 points. Despite their success, the team suffered an early playoff exit, and Mascherano recognizes there’s room for improvement - especially on defense, where Miami struggled with errors that led to scoring chances.
“The team did very well overall,” he noted. “Unfortunately, in the playoffs, they had two bad games and were eliminated. I’ll bring my ideas and make a few changes, but the foundation is strong.”
With Messi leading the charge, Mascherano’s mission is clear: guide Inter Miami to an MLS Cup and strengthen their growing legacy. For the Argentine coach, stepping into this challenge feels like a natural next step. “When you have good players, things become easier. This is a squad I like a lot,” he said, ready to take Miami to the next level.
