The football world bids farewell to one of its most electrifying wingers as Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, better known as Nani, officially retires at the age of 38. Announcing his decision in an emotional video shared on social media, Nani reflected on a career that spanned over two decades, bringing joy, drama, and countless unforgettable moments to fans worldwide.

With heartfelt words, Nani expressed his gratitude: “The time has come to say goodbye. I’ve decided to finish my career as a professional player. It’s been an amazing ride, full of highs and lows, but always with unforgettable memories. Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. Now, it’s time to focus on new goals and dreams. Obrigado. Thank you. Gracias. Grazie. Tesekkurler.”
From his beginnings in Amadora, Portugal, to the biggest stages of European football, Nani’s story is one of perseverance and success. After honing his skills at Sporting CP’s renowned academy, he burst onto the professional scene in 2005. It wasn’t long before Manchester United came calling, and in 2007, Nani began an eight-year chapter at Old Trafford, where he collected a glittering array of trophies, including four Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.
Nani’s dazzling speed, creative flair, and knack for spectacular goals earned him a place in the hearts of fans and the respect of his peers. Over his illustrious career, he played 728 matches, scored 151 goals, and provided 145 assists that showcased his vision and technical brilliance. For Portugal, he earned 112 caps and netted 23 goals, playing an important role in the nation’s successes on the international stage.
His journey came full circle in the summer of 2024 when he returned to his hometown club, Estrela da Amadora, in Portugal’s second division. It was a fitting final chapter, allowing him to give back to the community that nurtured his talent.
In his retirement announcement, Nani spoke with a sense of pride and fulfillment: “As everyone knows, everything comes to an end. I’ve made one of the most important decisions of my life – to hang up my boots. But I do so with the feeling of a job well done. It was a beautiful career, one filled with incredible achievements.”
Even as he steps away from the pitch, Nani’s connection to football remains strong. His Nani Football Academy in Fernão Ferro continues to inspire the next generation of players, and his involvement with Sintrense SAD ensures that his influence will be felt in Portuguese football for years to come.
To Nani, a player who brought joy to millions and defined an era of Portuguese football: Obrigado for the memories. The beautiful game was better with you in it.
